Fabric Store in Auckland, New Zealand: The Fabric Store.

When in New Zealand…buy Merino Wool!!!!

I went to Auckland, NZ last month for a friend’s wedding.  Apart from catching up with friends and seeing some sights, obviously the most important thing was, fabric shopping!

We only had a very rushed one hour for it, and had to get there on foot. I went to The Fabric Store. It was the only one I could get to by walking from the hotel. They have branches across NZ (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin), Australia (Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne) and USA (Los Angeles). They also have a blog showcasing finished products made from their fabrics.

Address: 139 Newton Road, Newton, Auckland 1010, New Zealand.

Yes, I live in Brisbane and there’s a branch here (which I’ve never been), but I went to the one in Auckland… Well, they are famous for their selection of pure buttery soft merino wool fabrics. NZ is famous for that. So I went, with a limited budget… it was too rushed and I forgot to take pictures of the store itself! Here are a few pictures I found on the net (referenced) to give us an idea.

I would say they specialise in silks, merino wool, wool blends and leather hides. Their selections appear to be considered and curated. Below are my own pictures, of fabrics I bought from there:

This is what I got. That was a lot of self discipline!

I love when they cut a piece of sample fabric and note down the composition for reference.

And also the price and width of fabric.

First: a 100% pure merino wool in Navy. I want to get one in every colour! But I always end up buying navy and grey fabrics.

Second: Navy silk embroidered with red squares. It's a bit sheer. Maybe a top? A skirt?

Last: A merino blend. It's thicker and more sturdy, and most importantly, it's $8/m. Could, not, resist!

Luscious fabrics...hm...maybe I should go to the Brisbane one to stock up on more. Depending on levels of self control :P

Back in hotel. Hey it fits in my luggage :D

Of course I am not advertising for the shop. I just want to share what I bought on my trip to Auckland. Later that day, friends drove us past a very large fabric warehouse (in Newmarket?), but didn’t have time to go in!  There, I have my excuse to go back to Auckland again some day!
